News from the Wild West

Dear Community,

It’s been a wild and nonstop ride since my tour through Europe and my recent move to Santa Fe, New Mexico. But here we are, Joshua and I, slowly getting settled in.

A friend of mine mentioned a parable when both Joshua and I were a bit overwhelmed: “Do you know how the monkey eats the elephant? One bite at a time.” As usual, I got my metaphors mixed up and said to my husband: “Let’s just deal with one elephant at a time.” And that pretty much sums it up.

Life is harsher out here compared to the Bay Area, but also more beautiful and real, and that matters to me at this point in my life. I can’t keep talking about sustainability without actually walking my talk. So here it goes!

There was a rattlesnake on the porch the other day, there are water issues because of the dryness, and I have to keep an eye on the dog at all time so she (or I for that matter) doesn’t end up as a snack to a large predator. I talk to all the beings on the land when I walk by, but also carry a large handmade knife Joshua gave me for my birthday! For me, it is a deep inquiry away from the hustle and bustle, to find out what really matters to me, what fulfills me and what happiness actually looks like, to me.

I love Santa Fe and when I am in town, I get the sense of deep roots and a long history of peoples living in harmony with the land. I am loving the seasons again, the fact that there is a hot summer followed by fall and winter, bringing such rich diversity and perspective to life. I love practicing in the heat, as it feels as though I can go deeper into my practice. The insights come as I move my body according to the breath and nature.

Yesterday I realized that I am removed from all the teachers I have ever had: my time with Anusara and John Friend has come to an end, and I am also very far away now from my primary teacher, Jack Kornfield. And I realized that I no longer require my teachers to be close by at this time. I have been showered with teachings and blessings for the last 3 decades, I have all the tools I need and now is the time to just let it all sink in as I do my practices in solitude. For the time being, I am no longer a seeker but instead have been found!

Tahira, a gifted visionary from Germany, predicted that I will pick up some purely feminine wisdom during my time here. And I realized, with surprise, that I haven’t had a female teacher for a very long time. It’s time.

I will start teaching two classes at Spandarama Yoga in Santa Fe in the beginning of August. I received an incredibly warm and generous welcoming by the community here and I am just so grateful for that. One of those classes will be recorded and offered on my website, so that anyone who so desires can listen in. There will be a donation system set up – similarly to the Dharma offerings at Spirit Rock for folks who wish to contribute. It’s all a big adventure, but as my wise husband said: “It was time to shake it up!”

My teacher training, starting in the fall in San Francisco, is already full. But there is a waiting list as people may still be drop out before it starts. You can contact aud@yogakula.com if you are interested in participating.

In October and November, I will be once again in Europe for workshops and classes – mostly in Zurich and Amsterdam. I will keep you posted as we get closer.

May you all be blessed with the time to inquire what really matters for you in this lifetime.

Wishing you a beautiful summer,

Katchie Ananda

Summer 2010 Newsletter

Dear Sangha,

Katchie and Joshua’s wedding

Saturday, July 10th, 2010, was a very auspicious day. Not only was it my late mother’s birthday, but this year Joshua, my partner of six years, and I got married.

To speak truthfully, I had my doubts about marriage. Julia Butterfly, who is known among her friends as the “B.S. detector”, recognized my hesitation and got me to focus on why I actually wanted to get married.

What came out of our discussion was a unique, unrehearsed and beautiful ceremony of two people who love each other and want to be in a committed relationship.

It was unexpectedly powerful, especially once Julia opened with a blessing that made us all aware of just how much Joshua had to sacrifice, since he would have rather eloped and gotten married on the sly. And there we were, in the midst of our community. To make it short – she got Joshua to cry. And as he himself remarked, this was perhaps one out of two or three times (the last time being when he was a child) that he cried in public. Needless to say, that got everyone else going too!

It was a short ceremony, with my dear friend angel Kyodo williams presiding as the wedding officiant. In addition, for me, the most powerful aspects were the blessings we received from my teacher Jack Kornfield, Julia’s opening and John Robbins’ wise words.

Milena Moser, my only Swiss family member present, since we are going to celebrate again in Switzerland, summed it up beautifully in her recent article in the Schweizer Familie. “Joshua embodies all of the virtues associated with Switzerland: he is loyal, dependable and real. He is Katchie’s piece of home away from home.”

Check out some wedding pictures here.

In other news, John Robbins has recently written one of the most viewed articles on the Huffington Post. It’s a worth-while read! Check it out: huffingtonpost.com/john-robbins

Spring 2010 Newsletter

Dearest Sangha,

On Earth Day, I attended an event where my best friend John Robbins and his son Ocean gave an inspiring talk. Having so many activists as friends, I’m always clued into the newest state of bad things happening everywhere. It is a blessing to have these friends and to be involved in their work, but, at times, it is also very difficult to be aware. Often, I’d rather put my head in the sand and pretend that I don’t know – like many others.

Still, I have hope. There are so many people around the globe that are working on the different facets of the jewels resting on what is called, “Indra’s Net”. The Net represents our ecosystem and universal consciousness. At each junction there is a jewel, which stands for the individual. Some of these precious jewels work on justice, others raise a conscientious child, or clean up some garbage at the beach.

At this point I personally believe that we are close to mobilizing a critical mass. The consciousness and perception of Earth as a sacred place is growing. When this critical mass is reached, we will witness a shift of epic proportions! That truly gives me inspiration and makes me smile. In the meantime, we get to practice the healing we crave on a large scale, on ourselves. For example, we can do this through our asana practice. It makes a difference whether we come to our mats and to our lives in a competitive or dominating manner versus simply remembering to embody our inherent wisdom in all that we do.

What really excites me is that we get to do this together, in partnership! As we are all connected by the threads of Indra’s Net, the more we operate under a model of partnership, reflecting the world in which we wish to live upon each other, the quicker we will see this shift materialize.

In April I completed an Anusara teacher training at Yoga Kula. One young man said that I pulled him back from the brink of giving up during the training by following him down the hallway where he was retreating. Apparently I said to him just one phrase, but that made all the difference to him and helped him to continue in the program.

I said: “My dear, unless you are dying, you should not separate from the pack. When you are suffering you need the support of your community more than ever.”

Let us not separate from the pack and do what we can to help each other to create a better world!

Winter 2009 Newsletter

Dear Community,

Greetings from Northern California, where the rains have blessed us abundantly after many years of drought.

A quick note to my 7th Heaven community: I made an error in my last Sunday announcement. I will be teaching on Sunday February 7th and there will be a sub for Sunday February 14th. Sorry about the confusion!

Now that my life has calmed down a bit, Joshua and I are finally getting married on July 10, 2010, which was the birthday of my mother. We will have a quiet wedding and then take off for a trip on horseback through Yellowstone National Park.

Joshua and I also decided to adopt a dog! We have been going to the animal shelter frequently to get to know the dogs. It is heartbreaking to see all of these beautiful, abandoned dogs waiting for a kind soul to adopt them. These creatures are to me a symbol of our broken trust with Mother Nature and the callousness we have shown in our relationship with her. As Joshua and I are not going to have any children, I am glad that we are taking this step of caring for another being by sharing our lives with them.
In other news – but somewhat related – after I have had the wonderful opportunity to benefit from the guidance of some of the greatest living teachers, I am happy to report that I have a new guru! His name is Cesar Millan and he is the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Under the guise of helping dogs he really heals people and that broken trust between us and nature. It is amazing to see that the problem with dogs always stems from the owner’s issues, and, as Cesar says – “…you may not get the dog you want, but the dog you need.”

What an inspirational man, he is truly my hero! Check him out…..Click here to visit his website.

P.S. I have lots of events coming up, so the page is rather long.
